The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) establishes basic criteria for the use of traffic control devices on public roads and private roads open to public travel. The MUTCD is defined as the national standard for traffic control devices in the Code of Federal Regulations and each state adopts some form of the MUTCD for use in the state.
